$5,000 towards tuition in addition to a new notebook computer

History:

The Kenneth Lloyd Cottel Scholarship Fund has been established by Precision Healthcare Solutions in memory of Ken Cottel (born April 26, 1930 passed away in April 2005). He was a caring person and was always there for his family. His guidance and compassion will be sorely missed by all who loved him. This gift will carry on his kindness to those in need.

Criteria:

  • The student must be enrolled in either a Canadian University or Community College in September.
  • The student must be graduating from secondary school with a 75% or better average.
  • The student must demonstrate a history of aiding the community through volunteer work or other forms of assistance.

Selection Process:

Each school may identify a candidate and forward the student's name, address, phone number, date of birth, counselor contact and required essay and other attachments to R. Princis, Coordinator Development, Public Affairs & Community Relations Department.

Final selection for the scholarship will be made by Kara-Lee Carson-Simpson, partner of Precision Healthcare Solutions.

Procedure for Applying:

Application forms are available from your school's Student Services Department, or online at http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/studentawards/.

The student must submit:

  • A statement or essay (500-1000 words) describing:
     
    How the applicants history of community services has helped those in need and how they have grown from the experience. In addition, the applicant is required to describe their vision for their own future and how they can continue to contribute to the community.
     
  • Two (2) letters of reference:
     
    a) one from the school
    b) one from the community
     
    These letters should describe the academic achievements of the student and the student's involvement in the community.
     
  • Please attach transcripts.

Deadline:

Check with your school's Student Services Department for application deadline. Student Services must submit student applications to R. Princis, Coordinator Development, Public Affairs and Community Relations no later than May 31.

Special Notes:

This bursary will be judged primarily on community involvement followed by academic achievements.


Scholarship Winners

Laura Gilbert, Laurier Secondary School - 2007 Award Winner

Our 2007 award winner for the Kenneth LLoyd Cottel Scholarship is Laura Gilbert from Laurier Secondary School. Laura will be attending Wilfrid Laurier University in the fall of 2007 and will be focusing her talents on her passion for music.
 
Laura dealt with the hardship of her brother living with cancer treatment from a young as well as surviving a brain tumor herself. Rather than dwell on her own issues, Laura stood strong and has dedicated much of her free time to supporting kids with cancer at Camp Trillium.

Lelanya Perryman, Oakridge Secondary School - 2006 Award Winner

In 2006, Lelanya was our first award winner for the Kenneth LLoyd Cottel Scholarship. Based on her selfless contributions to her community, Lelanya is the perfect candidate to receive this award.
